Sedation Dentistry- Making It Easier To Visit The Dentist

Visiting the dentist has never been easier until the introduction of Sedation Dentistry. Most of the dental patients especially children would feel anxiety and fear by just thinking about visiting a dentist. The fear and anxiety would even hold them back from visiting the dentist thus affecting their oral health very badly. The fear factor is present in almost eight percent of the people which in fact hold them from seeing a dentist. Hence they are deprived of good oral health.

Sedation dentistry is one way in which a dental patient can overcome anxiety and fear while seated in the dentist’s chair. The anxiety may be due to some unpleasant experiences in the past while undergoing dental procedures hence such bad experiences would haunt us always when you have to undergo a dental procedure.

Avoiding the dentist because of anxiety and fear is not a good idea as it may affect your dental health very badly hence to make your experiences more relaxing and less painful you can opt for sedation dentistry. Hence sedation dentistry is opted by the dentist or the patient who fear and have anxiety during a dental procedure. The type and level of sedation depends on the patient the dentist is dealing and the duration and nature of the dental procedure.

Sedation dentistry is also known as sleep dentistry but it is not true that all the sedation dentistry would make the patient sleep. The four popular type of sedation dentistry includes oral sedation, IV sedation, Inhalation sedation and general anesthesia. A few of the sedation would make the patient relaxed hence provide them a mental relief from anxiety. The sedation is always administered and referred by trained and licensed professionals and not all of them are recommended.

Inhalation sedation is a type of sedation which constitutes nitrous oxide and oxygen. The patient is made to inhale the nitrous oxide through a mask. On inhaling the gas the patient would feel relaxed and would be free from anxiety. They would not even feel the dental procedure sometimes a local anesthesia is given to numb the pain during dental procedures which makes the procedure much easier for the patient and the dentist.

Oral sedation is another popular sedation and the level of sedation depends on the type of oral drug or sedation the doctor prescribes the patient. Drugs like Xanax and Halcyon are a few of them used in oral sedation methods. Oral sedation wouldn’t numb the pain but can provide mental relaxation and lower anxiety.

IV sedation is a stronger type of sedation and this sedation can put a patient to sleep hence not only provide mental relaxation but also relief from pain. With such sedation the patient would not feel or be aware of the dental procedure hence such sedation is usually used by the dentist in case of complex and long dental procedures.

General anesthesia also makes a person unconscious and hence the patient would not feel or realize any aspects of the dental procedure. Such sedation is provided only by licensed anesthesiologists. Usually patients who require oral surgery of complex nature are provided general anesthesia. With a lot of sedation options now available for patients while undergoing dental procedures going to the dentist have now become much easier and not at all fearful. The results are, better oral health and regular and timely dental checkup.
